Papers in a state of permanent astonishment report that a beach ball seen near the shoreline has become the latest object to be declared “deeply meaningful” by people with too much time and a magnifying glass.

According to the theory, the ball’s repeated drift toward a pier is not simple wind, but a “symbolic refusal to stay put”, which is apparently how one identifies a side mission now.

One analyst, speaking with the calm certainty of a man who has never been told no by a laminated sign, said the ball’s colours “strongly suggest a quest chain involving optimism, poor timing and a small amount of debt”.

A local dog briefly intervened, at which point the ball was described as “reacting to the environment”, which is just a posh way of saying it rolled away.

The site in question does not confirm any of this, because the site is a beach ball and cannot talk. Still, commentators remain convinced it is “doing something important”.

Experts advise everyone to stop asking the beach ball for answers, unless it starts paying council tax.
